A high school in West Virginia is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old student, who was killed in a crash on Monday, Sept. 23. The young man was a student at Lincoln County High School.
According to reports, two pickup trucks were going in opposite directions around a sharp bend when they collided. They were in Hamlin, on State Route 3. The crash happened sometime between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
After the crash, both trucks left the road and stopped in the ditch. One of the pickups was smoking, and a man who lived nearby ran out with a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
Both people in the accident got rushed to the hospital by emergency crews. One of them had to be airlifted from the scene. Later reports clarified that two people suffered injuries in addition to the young man who lost his life.
The high school knew that the sudden loss would be hard on the other students, and they brought in grief counselors for those who needed it. Those students did talk about how happy the young man was, how he was always smiling and how they could turn to him whenever they needed help.
They also felt shocked at how quickly he was taken from them at such a young age. “He didn’t get to experience graduation,” a fellow student said. “He didn’t even get to go to homecoming this year. It’s truly heart-wrenching.”
